The Name

Matthew explains:

We are often asked how we came up with the name, "The Barn Swallows". Sandy and Paul had had various formations of their band "Blue Moon" before I joined them in Blue Moon. When we all decided that Sandy and I would branch off as a duo, we considered keeping the name Blue Moon, but it didn't seem right without founder Paul, plus we wanted to signal a change. We could have just gone with our own names, which would have certain advantages. But giving a band name to the duo also would indicate our integrated, rather than individualized, approach to our music. It would also give us the flexibility of adding and integrating personnel as needed. Also, like a bird protecting its nest with spread wings, we thought having a band name might help us look bigger than we were.

So, I was chopping down the weeds on the back 40 on my tractor, when this pair of little birds came dive-bombing at me. These birds would swoop down by my ear, missing by mere centimeters, flying low to the ground, and then bouncing up in the air with a sudden burst of wing-flapping, banking left and right- these birds were quite talented flyers. I didn't know whether they were catching insects that I was stirring up, or if they were trying to protect their turf, or if they were just being playful, or maybe some combination of the three. It was kinda scary at times, and I even jumped off my tractor when one swoop got particularly close. But these were truly beautiful birds- dark grey wings framing a shiny blue back, with a white chest underneath, accented by rust-colored edges, and a forked tail providing some of its fine steering. When I investigated into these birds, I found them fascinating, even to their making their nests out of mud and straw in barn rafters. The name seemed to evoke both rustic environs and graceful melody.

The name also provides a nod to the many bird-oriented names of other bands we love and respect: starting with the Byrds, and the Hawks (the original name of The Band), through the Jayhawks, Eagles, The Dixie Hummingbirds, Them Crooked Vultures, Wings, Ryan Adams and The Cardinals, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Black Crowes, Counting Crows, The Yardbirds, the Dixie Chicks, Phoenix, Flock of Seagulls, the Sandpipers...ok I'm reaching now.... Anyway, thus and so, "The Barn Swallows" was born.
